Waterford Duathlon 2014

The Butlerstown Duathlon, run by Waterford Triathlon Club, got underway in fairly miserable conditions under leaden skies, but was to be lit up by strong performances from local athletes.

The opening 5k run failed to separate the men’s field, with 7 competitors –Johnny Forrester, Kevin Coleman, Paul Ogle, Eoin Lyons, Patrick Ryan, Kenny Curran and Pat Fitzgerald - arriving back to transition running shoulder to shoulder.  It was to be a blistering performance on the bike leg that would allow WTC athlete Paul Ogle to assert his dominance over the field with a race best bike split of 32:23 for the 20k.  He came into T2 with a clear lead that he wasn’t to relinquish over the final 3k run, crossing the line in 1:02:55.  Behind him, a fierce race for second was unfolding between Middleton Tri’s Tim Mahony and Eoin Lyons of Waterford Triathlon Club, with the Cork athlete eventually outkicking the local man to take silver.

There was to be a similar story in the women’s race, though it was in the first run section that Ellen Murphy of Belpark established the lead she was to hold for the rest of the race, taking nearly a minute and a half out of her nearest rivals.  An equally strong bike leg and second run saw her home in 1:10:50.  Behind her, Katie Fitzgerald of Piranha and Claire Devitt of Tipperary Wheelers were fighting out their own version of Iron War, with nothing to separate them until the final stretch of the run, with Katie digging deep to secure second place.
