World Qualifier Champs in Athy
This year’s race in Athy was the sprint distance qualifier for the ITU World Triathlon Champs in London in 2013 so as such attracted a large strong competitive field of almost 800 athletes with many of our own members vying for a place. With so many entrants and such a narrow river, there were 10 starts done according to age-group so no-one knew how many of their competitors were doing as they were in a different wave. It was only at the end of the day after times were adjusted that results were known. The 750m swim involved a short upstream swim and then downstream towards the exit. The 20k bike got very congested at times with so many on the road with the 5k run including some messy cross country sections especially with the heavy rain during the day.
Davin Power had a brilliant race to finish 12th overall in 1.03.21, 2nd in his age-group with one of our Junior members Kieran Jackson also having a great race to finish 14th overall in 1.03.34. Shane Scadding was next home in 1.04.10 in 17th place, winning 1st his age-group with Peter Barry not far behind in 19th place in 1.04.27 to finish 3rd in his age-group. Davin, Kieran, Shane and Peter all now qualify for the World Champs next year.
John McDonald was next home in 1.09.10 with Junior member Damon Crowley having a brilliant race to finish in 1.10.00 with Aidan McCarty finishing in 1.20.15. New club members Jim O’Brien and Jerry Buckley both finished in 1.24.07 and 1.34.37 respectively.
The Olympic distance race was on here in Athy the day before with each discipline double what the sprint was. Michael Moloney was first home from the club in 2.15.36 with Bernard Keane finishing in 2.23.40 and Padraic Connolly home in 2.36.14. Niall Edmondson was delighted with his 1st Olympic distance race to finish in 3.01.22 with Bob Cowman just seconds behind in 3.01.59. Annette O’Mahony was next home in 3.15.23.
