Elaine Flakes Tralee

Tralee Bay Sprint Triathlon, Sat 9th August, 2014-08-14

I did this event last weekend while on holidays in Kerry with the family.

The race director’s briefing

“Flake back across the bay from the other side. Go into transition, one way round (to keep it fair), then out to the mount line.  Flake out the road, round the cone and back again.  Go back into transition, one way round (to keep it fair), then flake out the road again, turn left, round the cone and flake back again to the finish.”  They love their flakes in Kerry!!

The experience

The race took place in Fenit, about 15mins drive west of Tralee. It was a lovely sunny, but very windy day.  Five bagpipers, wailing in harmony, piped us around to the opposite side of the bay to start the swim, and the cows came charging down to the shore to see what all the fuss was about!!.  After a deep water start, the biggest challenge was keeping ‘straight’  as wind and tide pushed us in to the shore.  It was wonderful to do a straight line swim for a change.  Transition was in the car park next to the beach where we exited from the swim.  The cycle was a wind assisted flight 10k eastwards followed by a 10k wind resisting fight back again.  Hats off to Tralee Tri Club for organising a road closure for this.  The road runs next to the shore for a while giving lovely views of the Slieve Mish mts across the bay.  The run headed out the same road as the cycle for about 2k then turned off left.  The downhill run to the turn around point gave a stunning view across Barrow Harbour and Banna Strand.

Overall the race was very well marshalled.  I think I was the only representative from the eastern part of the island.  I had one little gripe though: the women were split between the two waves (I’m not clear how).  I was second woman over the line and I came sixth, though the first six women finished within two minutes (1hr14mins – 1hr16mins).  Had we all started together we’d have had a really great race – well, OK, I’d have had a more fun race, with closer competition to chase after.

If you’re in the area in 2015 I’d highly recommend the race!
